Part time Detention Attendants typically work during the night hours to monitor prisoners. Applicants are required to pass psychological testing by Civil Service.
The crossing guard program provides civilian personnel to safely cross Southampton Town children at the Town’s schools when school is open.
The part-time program offers opportunities to adults who are at least twenty and a half years old and have an interest in having a career in law enforcement. The program does not require the Suffolk County Civil Service Test, but applicants are put through a rigorous background check, polygraph exam, written and verbal psychological testing, and medical exam. Then if successful the department will sponsor the candidate to the Suffolk County Police Academy for six months. Once the academy is completed the candidate will continue training in the Field Training Program applying academy training to patrol functions.
The traffic control officer program offers opportunities to young adults ages seventeen and above with a full driver’s license to work alongside the Southampton Town Police Department on a part time basis. Their duties include monitoring parking complaints at area beaches, commercial and residential areas. Assisting with traffic control at special events, traffic accidents, and hazardous conditions during major weather events.
